Cosmetic & Benign Lesions

Not all skin lesions are cancerous, but they can still cause concern, discomfort, or cosmetic issues. At Roseville Skin Cancer Clinic, every procedure begins with a college of surgeon certified specialist-led assessment, giving you clarity, reassurance, and treatment tailored to your needs.

What We Treat

  • Lumps, lipomas, cysts & other benign lesions – Carefully assessed, sometimes with on-site ultrasound or biopsy. Treatment may include surgical excision or cryotherapy, depending on size and location.
  • Cosmetic mole & lesion removal – Non-cancerous moles and growths can be removed for functional or aesthetic reasons. Options include shave excision or surgical excision under local anaesthetic for comfort.
  • Precancerous lesions – Conditions such as actinic keratoses can develop into skin cancers if untreated. These may be treated with excision or topical therapies, or cryotherapy.

Common Benign Lesions We See

Many skin growths are harmless, but they may look like skin cancers or cause irritation. The most common include:

  • Moles (Naevus): Usually harmless brown or black spots, but must be monitored for change.
  • Seborrhoeic Keratoses: Warty, “stuck-on” growths that are benign but often removed if itchy or unsightly.
  • Lipomas: Soft, fatty lumps under the skin that can be left alone or removed if large or bothersome.
  • Epidermoid (Skin) Cysts: Firm lumps filled with keratin; may need removal if inflamed or infected.
  • Pilar (Scalp) Cysts: Smooth lumps from hair follicles, common on the scalp; often removed for comfort.
  • Dermatofibromas: Firm nodules, often pigmented, on arms or legs. Harmless but removable if symptomatic.
  • Skin Tags: Small, soft growths in skin folds. Easily removed for comfort or cosmetic reasons.

While these lesions are benign, only a professional diagnosis can rule out more serious conditions.

Cryotherapy – Freezing Treatment

Cryotherapy is a quick, safe, and cost-effective procedure that removes skin lesions using liquid nitrogen.

Common uses:

  • Benign lesions such as warts or seborrhoeic keratoses.
  • Pre-cancerous lesions such as actinic keratoses.

What to expect:

  • Brief stinging or discomfort during treatment
  • Local swelling or blistering before a scab forms and falls away naturally
  • Healing times vary — the face usually heals faster than the legs
  • Temporary redness or irritation at the site
  • Possible scarring or pigment changes (lighter or darker skin in the treated area), especially on the face or in darker skin types
  • Rarely, infection if the area isn’t kept clean
